SGhouse

In a search for their forever home, we worked with our clients and found a historical gem in need of an overhaul. The Van Sweringen Gate House in Shaker Heights became available for the first time in almost 50 years, and we immediately knew pulling in the driveway that we had found their Secret Garden. This private and unique home and site was perfect in many ways, but needed a full remodel and repurposing of many of the existing spaces to accomodate a young active family. We planned a phased remodel of the main house, then designed and built a glass breezeway and carriage house. Wanting to stay true to the home and its historical roots, we updated with modern amenities while designing each space staying true to its original style. The spaces are grand yet comfortable and complement the original architecture. As you walk through the entry, you’re welcomed with a grand staircase leading to the second floor. We featured the breakfast nook as a focal point off the foyer, which sets the stage for the stunning dining room. The kitchen and hearth room are bright and clean, showcasing a warm wood herringbone floor, custom cabinetry, and rich marble countertops. The whimsical bedrooms are what childhood dreams are made of. Every detail in the home is inviting while maintaining a level of sophistication. What was once overgrown and dilapidated is now the refined and beautiful SG House.
